Welding and Fabrication: What Is the Difference?

The two words are often used as if they mean the same thing, but they describe different scopes of work.

Fabrication is the complete job of turning raw material into a finished metal product. It covers reading the drawing, planning the work, cutting, bending, joining, finishing and inspection.

Welding is one of the joining methods used within fabrication. It fuses metal parts together using heat, and usually a filler metal, to create a permanent joint. Some fabricated products need no welding at all and are bolted or riveted instead; others, such as frames and stands, depend on it.

Knowing where welding fits in the job matters. Parts that are cut and bent accurately need less force to fit, less filler and less grinding, and they distort less when welded. That is why we control cutting, bending and welding in one workshop.

How a Fabrication Job Runs at Vidhee Eng. Works

1. Enquiry and Quotation

You send a drawing, sketch or sample with the material, quantity and any finish requirement. We check whether the design can be made as drawn, point out anything that will add cost, and send a quotation with a delivery date.

2. Planning

Before any metal is cut, we decide the cutting layout, bend sequence, joint design and welding method. For assemblies, we plan the fit-up and use jigs or fixtures where needed, so every piece in a batch comes out the same.

3. Cutting and Forming

Blanks are cut on our CNC fiber laser cutting machine and formed on the CNC press brake. Accurate blanks give tight joints, which is the first step towards a good weld.

4. Fit-Up and Welding

Parts are tacked, checked for square and dimensions, and then fully welded with the method that suits the material and thickness. Welds are cleaned and dressed as the drawing requires.

5. Inspection and Dispatch

Dimensions and welds are checked against the drawing under our ISO 9001:2015 quality system. Parts are then packed to avoid damage and dispatched on the committed date.

Welding Methods We Use

• MIG welding: a continuous wire is fed through the torch under shielding gas. It is fast and well suited to sheet metal, thin-gauge parts and production batches.

• TIG welding: a non-consumable tungsten electrode gives a precise, neat weld. It is used where appearance matters and for thin stainless steel.

• Stick (SMAW) welding: a flux-coated electrode makes it a robust choice for heavier sections and structural steel.
